Turkey has a historic responsibility and obligation towards the Balkan countries, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Saturday in Montenegro, adding that Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country he visited a day ago, can overcome its problems in unity.

Erdogan was welcomed at the Podgorica airport Saturday morning by Deputy PM Dritan Abazovic, and he resumed his trip to Cetinje where he met his Montenegrin counterpart Milo Djukanovic.

Addressing the media, Turkish President emphasised the friendly relationship between Turkey and Montenegro, and added that their economic cooperation has a strong potential for further development.

He also emphasised the role that the two countries play in contributing to the peace and stability in the Balkans and the rest of Europe.

“We strongly supported Montenegro’s NATO membership and we sincerely hope that this country’s membership in the EU will contribute to the stability of the whole region,” said Erdogan.

Asked to comment on his visit to BiH and statements of local officials, Erdogan said that his two visits these days show Turkey’s responsibility towards the region.

“We have a historic responsibility and obligation here. That’s why we continue our visits to the Balkan countries. I was in BiH yesterday and I talked to our friends there. Their unity is very important to us. I believe that Bosnia and Herzegovina can overcome its problems in unity and togetherness,” he stressed.

During his visit to Montenegro, Erdogan will also meet Parliament Speaker Aleksa Becic and Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic, and is set to visit local mosques and religious schools.
