Citizens gathered in Sarajevo in support of the family of Dzenan Memic, a young man whose mysterious 2016 death remains unsolved, after two suspects were acquitted of all charges related to the case – which the Memic family welcomed as they believe someone else killed Dzenan.
The Supreme Court of Bosnia’s Federation (FBiH) entity on Tuesday acquitted Ljubo and Bekrija Seferovic, who prosecutors said were responsible for a traffic accident that claimed the life of the 21-year-old.
This is the third time that courts acquitted the two, as there was no evidence that would beyond reasonable doubt establish that the alleged traffic accident ever happened.
The body of the young man was discovered in February 2016 in Sarajevo.
The father and sister of Dzenan, Muriz and Arijana Memic, have been accusing local authorities of trying to hide young man’s killers and trying to steer the investigation into another direction – which they argued resulted in the charges against the two suspects.
Arijana Memic said that the acquittal on Tuesday represents “the victory of a father against a corrupt system.”
“There was no traffic accident,” Arijana Memic said at the gathering, which was organised at the place where her brother’s body was found.
“This is a victory for our family, for the Justice for Dzenan (group) and for all the people who supported us,” she said.
Meanwhile, there is an ongoing case before the Court of BiH against five people who were charged with trying to cover up the crime.
The five suspects are Zijad Mutap and his daughter, Alisa Ramic, who was Memic’s girlfriend at the time of his death, Hasan Dupovac and Zijad Baric, police officers who allegedly obstructed the investigation by mishandling evidence and witness statements, and Muamer Ozegovic, an employee of a hotel who allegedly erased a video from a security camera that could have served as evidence.
