Here’s a beautiful story about the power of kiirtan from Dada Maheshvarananda (the photos were taken at the Earth Summit Eco-92):I arrived in Brazil in February 1992, my first time in Latin America, unable to speak Portuguese or Spanish. The United Nations was preparing for the first Earth Summit which would be held in Rio de Janeiro from June 3 to 14. The heads of state from nearly every country agreed to attend, but their meeting was closed with top security. Meanwhile, the environmental non-government organizations decided to hold a simultaneous event for the public in Flamengo Park, called the Global Forum or Eco-92. More than 1,000 organizations had stands and organized talks and workshops, including Ananda Marga, AMURT, and Proutist Universal. During those 12 days, over 50,000 people came. A tremendous amount of public relations and pracar took place there.Six weeks before the big event, Ananda Marga was invited to attend a meeting to organize an inter-religious vigil and celebration that would take place on the night of June 4-5 in the Global Forum. Frankly, I was skeptical, because many religious leaders are dogmatic. However, I should have realized that only open-minded people go to any inter-religious program.Rubem César Fernandes of the Institute of Religious Studies, coordinator of the inter-religious event, impressed me. As he welcomed us to the small room, he showed equal respect for each participant, whether they represented a large denomination or a fringe group. He explained that on the night of June 4th the park would not close. Instead, all groups would first give a 2-minute “invocation of the sacred” in the amphitheater while the crowd held candles. When the question arose as to the order of the groups, Brother Ananda, Rubem’s assistant, said, “Let God decide.” So the names of the 12 groups were put into a hat. The first one to be drawn out was Ananda Marga. Each group was then assigned to one of the 15 workshop halls in the park to do whatever programs we wished that night. At dawn all would come back to the amphitheater for the closing. When I asked the Margiis of Rio de Janeiro what they wanted to do that night for six hours in our hall, they immediately said, “Akhanda Kiirtan!” So I printed 1,000 leaflets explaining the universal mantra and dance in Portuguese on one side, and English on the other. I assigned two dadas who were fluent in both languages to stand at the entrance with the leaflets and answer questions. If anyone was especially interested, they could orient them how to join the dance. That afternoon I left the park and went across the street to the Flamengo Hotel to take a shower in a friend’s room. As I got in the elevator to descend, an Afro American wearing a colorful West African dashiki gown asked me if I was from India. He said he was a professional drummer and had been to the Kumbha Mela festival there. So I told him about the inter-religious vigil that night, and he promised to try to come. Before the program started, there was an evening concert of spiritual music at 8:00 pm. Dada Nabhaniilananda performed for the first hour, backed up by Dada Bhavamuktananda on keyboards, Kamala on vocals, and five Rio Margii musicians. The crowd of three thousand warmly received the Prabhat Samgiit song, “Tumi Ye Esecho Aj.”Dada’s songs about ecological destruction, injustice and spirituality deeply moved and inspired the audience. When he sang “Warriors of the Rainbow,” he explained his optimism that humanity will soon unite to solve the terrible problems of hunger, poverty, and pollution. “Gather all ye who love the world from distant lands,” Dada sang. The last song the band performed ended with more than five minutes of kiirtan. The entire crowd sang along with the universal mantra, “Baba Nam Kevalam.” Two hundred danced to the music in front of the stage. Clearly the crowd loved it.After the concert, spiritual leaders from each faith were asked to briefly invoke the Supreme. Whereas we had started organizing with 12 groups, our numbers had swollen by word of mouth so that one or two leaders of 32 traditions waited in line behind the stage, including Catholics, Jews, Lutherans, Islamic Sufis, Japanese, Tibetan and Zen Buddhists, Hindus, Brahma Kumaris, Baha’is, Afro-Brazilian religions, Brazilian indigenous people, and others.Didi Ananda Anudhyana and Dada Nabhaniilananda were first. They represented Ananda Marga with Namaskar, the “Samgacchadvam” mantra and two minutes of kiirtan. Afterwards Didi sat on stage with one leader from each of the other traditions. After a period of silence for meditation or prayer, everyone left the amphitheater to go to their tradition’s hall or to wander freely and dialogue with others. More than 7,000 people from Brazil and throughout the world attended the program to celebrate spirituality and the unity of humanity. In the hall assigned to Ananda Marga, about 90 Margiis and their friends from Rio and a couple of dozen Wholetimers had decorated the hall, set up the puja table, and brought lots of instruments for a six-hour kiirtan from 11 pm to 5 am. But as soon as the music started, a huge crowd of onlookers packed around all the doors and windows, staring in amazement. The two dadas at the entrance handed out the thousand leaflets as quickly as they could in a few minutes. On the white board we wrote the Baba Nam Kevalam mantra and its meaning in English and Portuguese. The singers were so enthusiastic and the crowd so thick, the dadas were unable to explain anything to anyone.I watched a Brazilian college student at the front. She took off her shoes and put them in the corner with all the other shoes, then she raised her arms and joined the circle of dancers. Dozens more followed her. The Afro American drummer I had met in the elevator walked in, looked around, then sat down behind a pair of tabla drums from India and pounded out incredible rhythms for hours!Attracted by the clear ecstasy of the dancers, more than 800 new people joined the kiirtan at different times, far outnumbering the Margiis. Five times that number watched and listened during the night, enchanted by the sound of the universal mantra and the sight of shining dancers and those sitting around the room deep in meditation. International film crews sometimes walked in, turned on their bright lights and recorded a few minutes of the blissful dancers moving around the puja table. At 5:00 the tremendous kiirtan ended and Dharmacakra was held. Then we all walked back to the amphitheater for the morning celebration. The Dalai Lama, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, would be the guest speaker along with Dom Hélder Câmara, Archbishop of Brazil. Representatives of ten of the largest religions sat on the stage, and more than a hundred journalists and television crews from around the world stood at the foot of the stage to record this historic event.Dada Nabhaniilananda, Kamala from Australia, and I had a quick consultation. Though they were not on the morning program, they decided to wait backstage just in case an opportunity arose. But the three of us agreed that if that happened, it would be better to sing a spiritual song in English, because if they sang kiirtan, others might feel we were trying to “push our religion” on everyone.A few minutes after 6:00 am, the Dalai Lama had still not arrived. Rubem Fernandes began his introduction. He started reading out the names of all the leaders of the organizations that were participating. It seemed obvious that he was stalling for time. Suddenly, at the back of the crowd, a heckler started shouting, “You’re all going to hell! Jesus Christ is the only way!”Unable to quiet him, Rubem at the microphone said, “Now we’d like the monks of Ananda Marga to sing their mantra.” Shocked, I turned to the dada beside me, “Did he say what I think he said?!” Dada Nabhaniilananda took his guitar to the microphone and Kamala explained what the mantra meant. As they sang “Baba Nam Kevalam,” I noticed that hundreds of people in the crowd, who had learned the mantra during the night, sang along! After ten minutes the Dalai Lama arrived and the early morning program began. The Dalai Lama spoke movingly about the need for inner peace. A Brazilian sang the beautiful “Asa Branca” (“White Dove”). U.S. saxophonist Paul Winter played a haunting song about the wolf.At the end the ten religious leaders from different traditions spontaneously stood and began embracing one another. However the crowd wanted more.Dada Nabhaniilananda walked up to the microphone but it was turned off. The sound engineer refused to turn it on. Dada looked at the crowd, pointed at the mic, shook his head, then pointed at the sound engineer. The crowd roared, and the engineer wisely turned it back on. Dada then asked Paul Winter to come play with him, and, because the two had become friends backstage, he agreed. Quickly two flautists and four Hare Krishna musicians joined them. Dada translated the mantra as “Everything is an expression of the Supreme Consciousness.”As soon as they began, the Afro American drummer ran to the front of the stage in his colorful dashiki, threw his arms in the air, and shouted, “Like this!” as he danced back and forth. Five thousand people stood and copied him, singing and swaying back and forth in unison. It was a very moving climax to a night of spiritual unity. All the acaryas and Margiis were astounded. It became clear to us all that Baba gave kiirtan as a gift for all humanity. … See MoreSee Less
